Neon Exile

More about the project...

Neon Exile is an open-world persistent MMO created from the ground up for VR. It is a world where your actions matter because anything you build, craft or even drop, will persist in a single shared multiplayer instance of this groundbreaking dystopian world. Also, the world showcases an apocalyptic vibe. Along with giant mesas and industrial ruins that the players can climb up and build on. With this in mind, the world is under rule by enemy robots that the user must battle against to survive. As a result, the player can work with or against other players as well.

This project is built by the MCG (Mythical City Games) team. In this case, I was the Junior 3D Artist in the group. So, my responsibility was to plan, build, and texture the game environment models. Also, I had the task of assembling the main world itself. Thus placing buildings and environment assets and building the terrain.

Personal goals for the project...

The very beginning stages of the game were assembled during my internship until when my internship was complete I was offered a contract position to help complete the game. My goal is to develop my 3D skills involving, texturing, sculpting, modeling, and environment creation. Also, being able to learn a strong amount of project management is another big goal of mine.

Modeling/Environment Creation. To start, I was building a lot of 3D content in school but I knew I still didn’t have a high level of experience yet. I need to dive into the industry and really learn the ropes. I challenge myself with more complex models all of the time. At this time, during the project, I was also working with the lead 3D artist learning how to assemble clean and more efficient modes, allowing easy sculpting and texturing.

Texturing/Sculpting. This is a big weak spot for me. My knowledge is low. So, this is a major objective. For this reason, I worked very closely with the Lead 3D Artist to learn as much as I could. With this in mind, I was able to learn a lot about Substance Painter and ZBrush. Two software I have low knowledge of. Overall, this allows me to be fully effective in creating entire models from sketching the idea to modeling the object to texturing. Therefore, I now have more of an overall professional approach and completion of projects.

Project Management. This is a big one, I love project management. Without a doubt, this is where progress is made. Moreover, I really want to learn more about how to assemble a quick efficient workflow. As a result, Neon Exile was set up with tasks listed out on Trello and the project work files shared through Sourcetree. Hence, this allows all the code, UI, and 3D assets to all be shared without any interruption. So, I use Trello to my advantage, it helps organize a lot of my current projects.

At the end of the day, my goals were met. I was able to complete the 3D environment as well as over achieve on my goals and model some characters, robots, and the environment within the game. In summary, The game is on the market, allowing actual online players to consume the content within the game. In addition, VR really opens up the world to a lot of possibilities both in gaming and within industries; Through virtual calls and safe training practices.
