On The Move

More about the project...

This project is a part of a segment called Remax On The Move. A Vancouver Canucks content team creation. The goal is to figure out a way to virtually showcase the team’s road trips with fans via social media.

A relatively new software, Google Earth Studio, came to the surface during the 2019-2020 season. So, my task is to do further research and develop virtual tours. I took on the entire creative direction of the project, combining 2D elements with 3D elements. This allows the development of a 3D motion graphics tour to each city the Canucks visit.

Personal goals for the project...

Taking on this project was a big opportunity. In addition to this, it shares information with high detail. With this in mind, the project objective is to showcase a virtual tour. So, much of the graphics must showcase proper data to deliver accurate information to consumers. Also, learning how to use the new software efficiently is the goal.

Google Earth Studio. I find Google Earth very interesting, the idea of virtual 3D satellite imagery is amazing. So, finding out the same software can now interact with after effects just builds my interest even more. With this in mind, I must learn to key the google animations and add in smooth transitions in between locations. Also, learning how to develop GPS directions within the software along with running a day to night cycle. As a result, this can create amazing cinematic effects. Finally, understanding the communication between Adobe After Effects and Google Earth Studio is important.

Efficiency. This is a great opportunity to work on my motion design efficiency. With multiple road trips during the NHL season, I know I have to develop this project as a template. Firstly, this can be done using folders for each specific group of assets. Secondly, building-specific compositions that perform different actions, using expressions on specific tasks. This allows the easy addition of information down the road rather than having to recreate.

After Effects Expressions. Supporting the efficient template process, a good way to build great templates is by using expressions. For example, expressions use Javascript code to communicate with the assets/graphics to perform certain actions within the animation. With this, I was able to learn how to have text boxes resize themselves perfectly to the text within. For this reason, they are perfect for building waypoints for the different arenas. I was also able to learn a glitch effect adding expressions to the assets opacity setting.

At the end of the day, my goals were met. I was able to assemble a virtual tour using a clean UI that displays travel stats. Also while interacting with a virtual 3D map. Overall, showcasing the different arenas during the specific road trip the team was on.
